FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Solomon Schechter Academy was the dream of a few committed families in the Greater New London area, who yearned for an enlightened Jewish education in partnership with an outstanding secular education for the children of our community. Over 35 years later, we are privileged to enjoy the fruit of their effort and excited about expanding our community to include students and families of all cultures and faiths.

The staff of SSA is dedicated to assessing and updating our curriculum to ensure that we are providing the tools for academic excellence in both Judaic and secular subject areas. We also afford opportunities for our students to express themselves through art and music, to strengthen their bodies and their minds through physical education, to expand their talents through after-school and lunch-time enrichment activities, and to share their enthusiasm with the community through special programs.

Our intent is to develop children who become sensitive adults who realize they can make a difference by applying their knowledge and their talents towards Tikkun Olam, the improvement of the world. SSA students are encouraged to be creative thinkers and active doers. We teach the power of effort and responsibility to the community, both local and global, as the cornerstones of a life well lived.

At SSA we follow a Community Code of Conduct called Derech  Eretz which expresses our core values: respect, kindness,  inclusion, responsibility, participation and honesty. It has given us a new vocabulary for dialogue‚ a higher standard of behavior, and  raised our awareness of those around us.  We see it on the  playground, we apply it at our meetings, we discuss it with our  parents. Derech Eretz is not just a theme of the year, it is the legacy of our school.

A Solomon Schechter education is available to the broad spectrum of the Jewish and non-Jewish community. We welcome students and families of all cultures and faiths. It all starts with a visit.  We would love to show you around.
