Help SSA Student’s Effort to Provide Medical Attention for Chinese Orphans
 By Leah Berke
The theme of Solomon Schechter Academy’s Hanukah program was leadership. Leadership is choosing the right path and asking people to follow. Leadership is not only caring about yourself but also caring about others. To prepare for the Hanukah program, the 4th and 5th grade students were asked to write an essay on the topic, “If you could help someone or something with $100,000, what would it be? How could you earn money for that cause?” Some students thought about helping causes like food pantries, animal shelters, the Make–a-Wish Foundation, U.S. soldiers and others. I chose to help orphans in China.
I want to help orphans in China because I was a Chinese orphan myself. When I was in the orphanage, I did not receive good nutrition or medical care. I was lucky to have been adopted as a one-year-old baby by my mom, Helen Berke. I would like other Chinese orphans to get the care they need.  So, I decided to do something about it.
My first idea was to help feed the orphans, but I discovered the need for medical care was greater. Over 1,700 Chinese orphans need special medical care. I decided my project would be to raise money for medical care. I researched organizations that help provide medical care to Chinese orphans. I learned about “Love Without Boundaries” ( It was founded in 2003 by a group of adoptive parents. This organization helps Chinese orphans get needed nutrition, medical care such as heart surgery, and education.
I have already earned money by raking leaves and shoveling snow but I want to do more. I talked to my principal, Karen Rosenberg. Together, we came up with a plan. Every Friday at Solomon Schechter Academy, Tzedakah is collected for some worthy cause. For the month of February, the Tzedakah collected will be donated to “Love Without Boundaries”. Also, in connection with Chinese New Year, I will be selling boxes of fortune cookies for $5.00 per box beginning Febuary1st.
You can help Chinese orphans receive vital medical attention by buying a box of fortune cookies, or by donating at the SSA office or at the “Love Without Boundaries” website. For more information contact the SSA office at 860-443-5589 or visit our website
