Pre-K joins PJ library to learn about Sukkot

Our first PJ Library program was a great success thanks to pre-K
teachers Esther Morrell and Dorene Grandjean. Children enjoyed listening
to Lisa Marcus read the PJ Library book "Tamar's Sukkah" by Ellie
Gellman. After the story, children built model sukkot out of graham
crackers, frosting, and pretzel sticks.

Memorializing Rabbi Isidore Greengrass

Event Date:
Thursday, October 8, 2009 - 1:00pm - 3:00pm

During Sukkot, SSA students joined Rabbi Astor  in the planting of a willow tree in memory of Rabbi Isadore Greengrass. How appropriate this memorial is. Until he was not well enough to make the trip, Rabbi Greengrass traveled to New York every year just after Yom Kippur to scour the streets of Brooklyn for the various elements of the Lulav-palm, myrtle and willow. He would return to New London with his bundles and lovingly put them together for us. For Hoshana Rabba, which falls at the end of Sukkot, he needed many more willow branches. His neighbors must have wondered what happened to their willow trees!

4th/5th Grade Visit Sturbridge Village

Event Date:
Wednesday, October 7, 2009 - 9:00am - 2:30pm

Sturbridge Village depicts life in New England as it was in the early 1800s.  It was raining Tuesday, October 7, when the 4th and 5th grade students of SSA boarded the bus to experience what it was like to live as a pioneer.    The sun shone when we arrived and we were able to watch the artisans produce their crafts.   We sat in the one room school house and wondered how they managed.  Farming men and women performed their endless chores.  The bank and lawyer's offices were small; all the transactions were done by hand in antiquated ledgers.  We witnessed the firing of a musket and learned a few things about this particular weapon.  The general store was our last stop and we bought some souvenirs.
