We "Go Green" at the Science Jamboree

Every year, a group of Solomon Schechter Academy parents organize and run a daylong Science Jamboree based on one of the year's all-school science themes. Labs are created and taught by parent volunteers. Last March our Science Jamboree theme was "Go Green," with each lab pertaining to some aspect of helping to sustain our earth and its natural resources. Multi-age student groups visited the five labs, learning about and experiencing firsthand, alternative sources of energy such as wind and water power, water contamination and purification, recycling, and the rainforests. Each group created a poster about what they learned at each lab, and at the end of the day, shared their posters, findings, and opinions with the rest of the school.

Surf, Sun, Sand and Science on Beach Day

On a beautiful, sunny spring day, all of Solomon Schechter Academy – preschoolers through sixth graders, teachers, and several parents – set out for "Beach Day" at Waterford Beach. The day began with each group of students visiting several science stations, where they learned about sea shells, beach grasses, sand, and creatures that live in the sea. After a lunch break, an artistic element was added to the fun, and teams of students created sculptures on the beach, using the natural materials they gathered, including sand, driftwood, seaweed, sea shells, and stones.

Solomon Schechter Academy Medical Center

On Feb 12, 2009 the science teachers of SSA turned the social hall into an exciting, vibrant, teaching hospital. There were five surgeries going on simultaneously. Each operating room was staffed by attendings, chief residents, residents, interns and medical students. In room 1 there was a heart transplant going on, the staff in room 2 was taking out an appendix, the patient in room 3 was being treated for a rare muscle disorder, in room 4 a patient with arthritis was being treated, and in room 5 a brain tumor was removed. The very knowledgeable medical teams were comprised of the students (grades K-6) at Solomon Schechter Academy. These students learned from and taught each other while demonstrating their knowledge to their parents and visitors.
