Pi Day at SSA!

Event Date:
Monday, March 14, 2016 - 10:00am - 11:30am
It's Pi Day at SSA! Last year, third graders discovered a mysterious number near 3 relating the circumference of a circle to its diameter, no matter what size the circle. This year, our fourth graders have uncovered this same number in the formula relating the area of a circle to its radius. Explorations filling circular objects (snow sled, Frisbee, a plate, etc.) with small squares of known areas and cutting paper circles into sectors and rearranging them in the form of a parallelogram aided the children in their investigation. Thank you to Ian Frommer, Associate Professor of Mathematics at the US Coast Guard Academy, for presenting the Pi Day lesson to our students.
