Solomon Schechter Academy was teeming with cheerful voices on Wednesday, September 9th as students, parents and staff greeted each other on the first day of school. New this year is a school store staffed by our sixth graders. School supplies, healthy snacks and SSA items are for sale before the school day begins. As teachers finalized their last minute preparations, and children moved to their new classrooms, all wondered what new studies and challenges they would be encouraged to explore this year.
Every year at Solomon Schechter, a theme of study is chosen. This year’s theme is “Creating a Community”. Students will study communities around the world, throughout the ages as well as our Greater New London Connecticut community.
As we approach the Jewish New Year, 5770, we are busy preparing for Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Sukkot. Our K-3 students practiced the observance of Tashlich, throwing away our “sins” (symbolized by bread crumbs) into a moving body of water. The whole school came together for Apples and Honey and to wish each other a Shana Tova U’Mitukah—a good and sweet new year. To prepare for the harvest festival of Sukkot, the 6th grade will study the laws of building a Sukkah and will participate in the building of the school’s Sukkah. Student in K-3 will take a seasonal field trip to Scott’s Orchard to pick apples and find special autumn produce to decorate our Sukkah.
