On a beautiful, sunny spring day, all of Solomon Schechter Academy – preschoolers through sixth graders, teachers, and several parents – set out for "Beach Day" at Waterford Beach. The day began with each group of students visiting several science stations, where they learned about sea shells, beach grasses, sand, and creatures that live in the sea. After a lunch break, an artistic element was added to the fun, and teams of students created sculptures on the beach, using the natural materials they gathered, including sand, driftwood, seaweed, sea shells, and stones. The creations were documented with photographs, which are featured in a published book,Yachad – Together: Voices...from the Land, Voices...from the Sea. The book also includes students' poetry, inspired by being artists by the sea. It truly was a day of togetherness – learning, creating, and having fun.
