Every year, a group of Solomon Schechter Academy parents organize and run a daylong Science Jamboree based on one of the year's all-school science themes. Labs are created and taught by parent volunteers. Last March our Science Jamboree theme was "Go Green," with each lab pertaining to some aspect of helping to sustain our earth and its natural resources. Multi-age student groups visited the five labs, learning about and experiencing firsthand, alternative sources of energy such as wind and water power, water contamination and purification, recycling, and the rainforests. Each group created a poster about what they learned at each lab, and at the end of the day, shared their posters, findings, and opinions with the rest of the school. The Science Jamboree is always a highlight of the school year. Students long remember the day they made a light bulb go on by pedaling a bicycle as fast as they could; created a beautiful piece of stationery from old newspapers; and visited a tropical rainforest, which for one day seemed to appear out of nowhere, right in the middle of their school.
