Yom Ha'atzmaut

Event Date:
Thursday, April 26, 2012 - 1:00pm - 2:45pm

On April 26th, 2012, SSA celebrated Israel's 64th Anniversary of Independence. At 1p.m. the whole school lined up in the Oolam and proceeded to march outside to take part in a parade - led by Deniz Kayhan, who carried the flag of Israel, and cheered on by Abir Shamriz. Music played in the background and parents and teachers formed a "review stand". The students then sang the Hatikvah, the national anthem of Israel. It was very moving to watch - especially the little ones who were singing their hearts out. This was followed by class presentations: each joined class - K/1, 2/3, 4/5 and 6th Grade - performed songs, gave speeches, danced and played out scenes of Israeli history. The 6th Graders were dressed as Israeli soldiers and Abir did his best to teach them how to march. He may not have been very successful but it was certainly entertaining. The children of Kindergarten and 1st Grade were adorable as "the children of Israel" chanting "Israel is really great!!!". When it was time for the 2nd and 3rd Grades to perform Abir was once again there to help - lending his powerful voice to their song. The 4th and 5th Grades sang Shalom Aleichem and made brief but beautiful speeches about Operation Magic Carpet and Operation Ali Baba. Then the 6th Grade performed Hallelujah. It was absolutely beautiful! The students capped their presentation with another parade and went back inside. At 1:30p.m. they broke into two groups - K/1-6, 2/3-4/5 to tackle the task of creating their own country. After presenting their countries both students and teachers got a chance to let their hair down and enjoy some Israeli dancing. At 2:40p.m. the students were served dessert - yummy gigantic cookies shaped like the flag of Israel. The best part of the day was seeing how enthusiastic and sincere the students were, how much they were enjoying it all - you can't put a price on that.
